Progetto per realizzare una balena dimensioni reali in tessuto di lana cucita.
L'idea ha come origine un'immagine, che mi accompagna dall'infanzia, delle balene che milioni di anni fa nuotavano tra le colline "dove ora volano stormi d'uccelli" (da una frase di Leonardo). Le loro ossa sono state trovate in molte zone calcaree dell'Appennino settentrionale, dall'Astigiano al Bolognese, passando per le colline del Piacentino.
Durante gli anni Settanta, per molte città d'Italia, girava per le piazze una balena vera, conservata sotto formalina,e mostrata sotto un tendone con luci arancione. Le persone che me lo hanno raccontato parlavano di un intenso odore nelle narici e della difficoltà di avere una percezione totale dell'animale: ci si poteva camminare accanto su una passerella che costeggiava la vasca. Gli incontri con l'occhio. Chissà che fine ha fatto.
L'installazione originaria prevedeva che la balena fosse inserita uno spazio più piccolo rispetto al suo sviluppo: la immaginavo costretta tra le pareti, assumere la forma squadrata della stanza.
Un'immagine di soffocamento in contrasto con la morbidezza, il 'calore' del materiale utilizzato.
Il tessuto in lana, di due tonalità di grigio melangiato, è solamente cucito e riprodurrà il più fedelmente possibile le caratteristiche anatomiche del cetaceo, Balenoptera Physalus, il più grande e veloce del Mediterraneo.
Si tratta di un ‘work in progress’. Perché il progetto abbia ragione d’essere diviene fondamentale tutto ciò che è accaduto e accadrà durante processo di realizzazione: i contatti e gli incontri di questi ultimi anni, le reazioni delle persone cui ne ho parlato e ai ‘tecnici’ ai quali ho sottoposto i miei dubbi e chiesto aiuto. Mi piace immaginare le reazioni della gente che vedrà il lavoro concluso, installato.

Project to build a life-size whale made of woollen material sewn together.
The origin of this piece comes from a mental image that has haunted me for years: millions of years ago whales once swam between the hills, where ‘flocks of birds now fly’ (taken from a sentence by Leonardo da Vinci). Bone remains of these animals have been found in lots of chalky areas in the western Apennine region of Northern Italy, especially among the hills that pass through my home town, Piacenza, which lies between Asti and Bologna.
In the 1970s, an enormous real life whale was taken around the cities of Italy preserving its dead body by formalin. It was exhibited inside a marquee tent which was illuminated with orange lights. People who have told me about this story, described the intense smell that filled their nostrils and of their difficulty to imagine what the whole animal actually looked like. A catwalk ran along the edge of the tank enabling people to get a close-up view of the animal’s eye.
Who knows what happened to it?
The first installation should see the whale filling a space that is too small for its potential inflated size. I imagine it being squashed up against the outer walls of the space, and so taking on the shape of the room. The combined feeling of the installation should be that of suffocation, contrasting with the softness and ‘warmth’ of the material employed.
The woollen material, made of two tones of grey which blend together, is simply sewn together and will be as faithful a reproduction as is possible of the Fin Whale or Common Whale, the largest and fastest found in the Mediterranean.
At this stage the project is still a ‘work in progress’. The real raison d’être of this piece is intrinsically linked to everything that has already taken place and will take place during its creation: the people I have contacted and met over the past few; the reactions of the people I have spoken to; the technical advice and help I have sought in order to resolve problems and overcome doubts. And of course imagining the reaction of people seeing the finished piece installed for the first time.
